Growing Branches: The Beginning of Our Journey

Branches Community Wellbeing didn’t begin as a grand plan or a polished idea. It began in the quiet, messy, very human spaces of our own lives — in the juggling, the caring, the exhaustion, the small sparks of hope, and the deep belief that things could be better for our communities.

It grew from lived experience. From being carers ourselves. From navigating the NHS and children’s services for years — sometimes as professionals, sometimes as parents, sometimes as people simply trying to stay afloat. And from the realisation that, despite everyone’s best intentions, too many people still fall through the gaps.

Where Branches Was Born

Branches came from frustration — the kind that builds slowly over time. The frustration of watching people struggle alone. The frustration of knowing support existed, but wasn’t always accessible, human, or joined‑up. The frustration of seeing carers carry so much, often invisibly, while trying to hold their own lives together.

But Branches also came from something softer: the belief that communities can grow stronger when we grow together.

We knew there had to be a way to bring compassion, connection, and dignity back into the heart of support. Not as a service. Not as a tick‑box. But as a way of being.

The Ups and Downs of Starting Something New

Starting Branches has been a journey of both courage and chaos.

There have been moments of excitement — when ideas clicked, when people said “yes”, when we saw the first signs of something real taking shape.

And there have been moments of overwhelm — trying to build something meaningful while still managing our own lives, our caring responsibilities, our work, and everything else that comes with being human.

Some days we felt unstoppable. Some days we felt like we were holding everything together with string and hope.

But every step, even the wobbly ones, has mattered. Branches is being built out of love, compassion and a desire to build better spaces for communities to thrive, and that is not easy or fast, well not for us. Progress at the pace of truth and trust.

Becoming a Charity: A Big Step Forward

We’re now in the process of applying to become a charity — a milestone that feels both huge and deeply right. Some days it is ‘arr what have we done’, when the burden of paper work feels heavy. Most days are about excitement and connection and plenty of tea.

Becoming a charity isn’t about status. It’s about commitment. It’s about saying: We’re here for the long term. We’re building something that belongs to the community, not to us.

It’s about creating a foundation strong enough to hold the work we believe in.

Growing Roots in the Community

As Branches grows, we’re exploring new partnerships and community garden spaces — places where people can breathe, connect, and feel grounded. Nature has always been part of our vision: a reminder that growth takes time, that seasons change, and that healing often happens quietly.

We’re also building support for carers and the wider community through:

 The Compassionate Caregiver Course

A gentle, reflective space for carers to reconnect with themselves, understand their emotional load, and learn ways to care for their own wellbeing — not just the person they support.

The Compassionate Café

A warm, welcoming space where people can simply be — no pressure, no expectations, just connection and belonging.

My Way Forward Peer Support

1:1 support rooted in lived experience, dignity, and choice. A space where carers can talk to someone who truly understands.

Together, these spaces form the heart of Branches: connection, compassion, and community.

Looking Ahead

We’re still at the beginning of our journey. There will be more ups and downs, more learning, more growing. But we’re moving forward with purpose — guided by lived experience, shaped by community voices, and grounded in the belief that we can build something better together.

Branches is more than a project. It’s a movement. A promise. A growing network of people who believe that support should feel human, kind, and shared.

And this is only the start.
